JW HAYDEN RECREATION CENTRE | Lexington, MA

Sgarzi Associates was hired to study the daily operations of the 49,000SF JW Hayden Recreation Centre, a non-profit youth center that is a rite of passage for the children of the town. The client charged the design team with creatively improving and updating the aging facility without changing the exterior appearance or shutting down the facility for an extended period of time.

Sgarzi Associates developed a detailed program and project approach during a comprehensive study involving the Centre’s staff and existing conditions reviews. Much of the proposed renovation will center on improved accessibility, clearer organization of the building’s circulation system, and more visibility into the activity spaces.

Two elevators will be added to make all three levels of the building fully accessible for the disabled. Significant upgrades will be made to the locker rooms as well as creating a much-needed family changing area and direct access to the pool deck through the locker room shower areas. Additional cosmetic upgrades and improvements to mechanical systems will also help modernize the facility and enable it to remain a vital part of the community.
