JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY | Baltimore, MD

While with Sasaki Associates, Chris Sgarzi was the project architect and project manager for the O’Connor Recreation Center at Johns Hopkins University, completed in 2002. This project involved a 60,000sf addition to the existing athletic building and a solution to complex circulation and security systems.

JHU was interested in creating an identity for recreational sports—which did not currently exist on campus—with a welcoming and visible fitness center.

In addition to the dynamic fitness center, the building includes a new three-court recreational gymnasium with an elevated jogging track, squash courts with movable back wall for use as racquetball courts, a two-storey climbing wall, a weight room and multi-purpose rooms for dance and aerobics as well as special events. The design also improved some of the athletic locker rooms and added daylight and locker rooms to the swimming pool area.
